West Ham United boss David Moyes has praised Jesse Lingard for scoring in last night’s Premier League victory.

However, he stopped short of confirming whether the Hammers on-loan attacker will be allowed to take their next penalty after failing to convert from the spot.

West Ham kept up their impressive form as they ran out 2-0 winners over Leeds United at the London Stadium.

Lingard opened the scoring in the 21st minute after the Hammers won a penalty, but his spot kick was initially kept out by Illan Meslier.

The 28-year-old showed quick reactions to convert the rebound, and seven minutes later, defender Craig Dawson grabbed the second – and final – goal of the game.

Speaking after the match, Moyes admitted Lingard wasn’t supposed to take the penalty, Declan Rice the man assigned to the duty.

The West Ham boss also revealed he wasn’t impressed with Lingard’s initial effort, but was happy at how he made amends and with his overall impact at the club.

“Both of them have been practicing all week and they have been in competitions all week in training,” Moyes told football.london.

“As far as I was concerned I would have been happy for Declan to take it but Jesse had been practicing all week.

“So he was big enough and brave enough to take it and I wasn’t impressed by his penalty but I was impressed with the speed at which he got to the rebound and got it into the net, so I am pleased.

“He has had a big impact here and I am really pleased for him.”

When asked if Lingard will be allowed to take the next one, Moyes replied: “I’ll decide on that [later] and the reason is I would not want the opposition to know exactly who will be the next taker.

“I have some other people who are in contention as well.”

Lingard has been sensational since arriving at West Ham and is proving a key player in the club’s pursuit of Champions League football.

As well as his qualities, his desire to take penalties shows how confident he is and how eager he is to get on the scoresheet, giving Moyes plenty of food for thought.
