David Moyes has claimed that Jeremy Ngakia was terrific during West Ham United’s agonising defeat to Liverpool on Monday, and did a fantastic job dealing with Sadio Mane, in comments reported by Football London.
The 19-year-old has been handed a tough task on both of the occasions he has been called into the first-team this season.
He made his senior debut against Jurgen Klopp’s side last month. And he returned to the lineup for Monday’s meeting at Anfield.
And while it ultimately proved to be a disappointing night for the Irons, Ngakia certainly gave a good account of himself in the 3-2 defeat.
He seemed to cope well with the threat Liverpool posed down West Ham’s right flank. And Moyes felt that he did a fantastic job on a more encouraging night for the Hammers.
“Jeremy was terrific,” he said, as reported by Football London.
“I have to say, he’s played two first team games and both of them against Liverpool and I thought tonight he was fabulous.
“Mane has been as good as anyone in Europe, would give any top full back a run for his money and I thought that young Jez did a great job on him. Some times you put the young boys in and they give you great hope.
“Very good, he was.”
TBR View – Ngakia set for big role in final months of the season
Ngakia has had to bide his time waiting for an opportunity. But it would be no surprise to see the teenager feature a lot more during the final months of the campaign.
Ryan Fredericks looks set to be sidelined for some time. And Ngakia certainly staked a claim to remain ahead of Pablo Zabaleta in the pecking order.
The Irons received a huge boost when Declan Rice forced his way into the first-team fold a couple of years ago.
And Ngakia can arguably target a similar feat this time around at a time when the Irons really need a lift.
