David Moyes hails Leeds 25-year-old who’s been ‘really good’ this season, likens to West Ham player
West Ham manager David Moyes has compared Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips to Hammers star Declan Rice, with the duo both away on internatonal duty with England.
Rice, 22, is a key player at the London Stadium who’s a mainstay under West Ham boss Moyes.
He’s a defensive midfielder that offers superb cover to the backline with his hard work in the centre. Additionally, he’s developing into a real leader that wears the armband in Mark Noble’s absence.
Moyes has likened Leeds’ deep-lying midfielder Phillips to the West Ham ace.
25-year-old Phillips does a similar role at Elland Road in front of the Leeds defence. Intriguingly, they are both in the England squad and could start the first game of Euro 2020 together in the Three Lions midfield.
“It means sometimes dropping between the centre backs or moving out to the sides to get on the ball — it’s essential not to just sit in the same spot in midfield — and Declan is adept at putting himself in the right place so the team can build up through him,” Moyes told The Times.
“Another with those skills is Kalvin Phillips who for Leeds United this season was really good at working hard to get into himself into space to receive the ball and start attacks. In some games he and Declan could be quite a combination.”
Are England too defensive with Rice and Phillips?
A Rice-Phillips combination in the England midfield would give them a real solid block in front of the defence. However, does it limit their attacking quality?
Gareth Southgate could pick four expressive players in front of that midfield pairing. A front four would have the freedom to play with high quality behind them.
It’s worth noting though that England’s strengths are in attack, so many fans want to see as many talented forwards included in the starting XI as possible.
