David Luiz has proven himself to be one of the best
When Chelsea re-signed David Luiz on transfer deadline day, many labelled it a panic buy. Considered a risk and a gamble, the Brazilian has had a brilliant season and, after being criticised for his display at Old Trafford last weekend, produced probably his best display of the season at Wembley on Saturday.
Marshalling one of the Premier League’s best strikers in Harry Kane, Luiz shrugged off the critics from last time out to look calm, assured and confident as he kept the England international firmly under control from start to finish, with only Nathan Ake’s poor marking at a set piece allowing him on the scoresheet.
With no Gary Cahill in the back three and Ake preferred to John Terry, Luiz comfortably assumed the role of the leader, organising the Blues defensive line with ease. Chelsea may be looking elsewhere for Terry’s replacement, but as a leader, they may already have one.
