David Luiz has confirmed his desire to remain at Arsenal for the time being, despite reports he may be let go when his contract expires this summer.
It was widely reported that the Brazilian had signed a two-year deal when arriving in a shock transfer from Chelsea last summer.
However, it has since become clear that Luiz actually signed a one-year deal with the option of an extension. According to a recent report from Sky Sports News, Arsenal are considering the possibility of not making that renewal happen for the Unai Emery signing.
However, The Telegraph has since suggested that Arsenal could consider renewing his deal if he takes a pay cut at The Emirates.
Well, it would appear that Luiz is open to the idea. Speaking to Record this weekend, Luiz admitted a desire to return to Benfica. That has been widely reported.
However, he also made it clear that he wants to remain at Arsenal for the time being.
“I have my ambitions at Arsenal and I want to live them intensely and in the best possible way.”
Whilst Luiz has been prone to his textbook errors at times for Arsenal this season the 33-year-old has also become a key member of Mikel Arteta’s backline.
With youngster William Saliba arriving from Saint-Etienne this summer, there is perhaps a ready-made replacement arriving but Arsenal could end up lacking the experience that Luiz would bring to the defensive unit.
