David Henen grabs weekend goal but Everton will not regret decision to axe him in summer 2018

Last summer, Everton made the decision to release youngster David Henen at the end of his contract.

Henen had not threatened to break into the first-team and with senior opportunities looking limited at Everton, he was forced to find a new club.

The 22-year-old had initially moved to Everton on loan from Olympiacos before July 2015 switch to Goodison Park.

But in his three years at the Merseyside club, Henen failed to play a single game for the first-team.

His only playing time in England came during a loan spell at League One side Fleetwood Town, where he bagged one goal in 13 outings.

It was a no-brainer for Everton to release him in summer 2018 and Henen was given the challenge of making Everton regret that decision.

The winger-come-forward joined Belgian top division side Charleroi on a two-year deal as he looked to kick-start his career back in the country of his birth.

And Henen managed to pick up his second goal of the season last weekend, scoring the equaliser in a home 1-1 draw against Genk.

It was the ex-Belgium under-19 man’s first goal since early November but he took his strike well.

However, regardless of his goal at the weekend, Henen has still not set the world alight in Belgium.

Everton will not be regretting their decision to let Henen go last summer – at least not yet.
