Darren Bent urges Joe Hart not to sign for Tottenham

Joe Hart could be in line for a shock transfer to Tottenham and former striker Darren Bent has backed the move during the Laura Woods Breakfast Show on Talk Sport.

The Times claim that the former England stopper could link-up with Jose Mourinho and bolster Spurs’ homegrown squad quota.

Hart played just three games for Burnley last season, all in the cup competitions, falling behind Nick Pope in the pecking order.

Bent spent two years at Tottenham and he believes the goalkeeper still has something to offer the club ahead of his move.

He told Talk Sport: “I do feel sorry for him. You think of the images of Joe Hart running around when they won that very first Premier League title.

“It just seems to have gone completely the wrong way for him. Ultimately you’ll think he’ll want to go somewhere and just play.

“He’s not going to get enough game time at Spurs I don’t think, Hugo Lloris seems to play all the time.

“I’d like to see him go somewhere and play, he’s a good goalkeeper and he’s still got a lot to offer.”

Despite not playing much football recently, Hart does have 340 Premier League appearances to his name, alongside 75 England caps.

Bent is right to suggest that Hart won’t be dislodging Lloris any time soon but there is enough to suggest he could act as a backup at the expense of Paulo Gazzaniga.

Competition

At 33 this could well be Hart’s last move and he’d go in with confidence that he might well force his way into the first-team reckoning.

The ex-England man earned £50,000-a-week at Burnley but Tottenham are willing to offer him closer to £35,000-a-week – which could slow down negotiations (The Times).

It might seem a surprise move, especially considering he’s unlikely to receive many opportunities to play.

Hart would get a few more years on the books at a top club though and it’ll certainly be interesting to see whether he does kick his heels in the stand, or have a part to play at some point.
