Newcastle United will be looking to make a big impression in January and Sky Sports pundit, Darren Bent, feels either Philippe Coutinho or Mauro Icardi would be the perfect type of signing.
Bent, speaking on Sky Sports yesterday, feels that the biggest names in football aren’t going to want to immediately come to Newcastle. The likes of Mbappe, for example, more likely to move to a Real Madrid or Man City.

However, Bent does feel Newcastle can bring in a few bigger names. And he told the Soccer Saturday panel that someone like Coutinho or Icardi might be ideal for the time being.
“The thing for Newcastle is they might have to go a bit rogue. The likes of Mbappe and Haaland, these guys are not going to come,” Bent said.
“So they might have to go and get, you know, a couple of guys who aren’t maybe as dedicated to their football, but who you know are top players. Someone like a Coutinho, for instance. He’s got all the ability in the world but fallen on harder times. Maybe Icardi at PSG. Those sorts of player will bring the fans in.”
Both Coutinho and Icardi have been linked with moves to St James’ Park already.
TBR’s View: Coutinho or Icardi would excite Newcastle fans
Bent makes a valid point here. Just because the money is there, doesn’t mean the very best will want to join Newcastle. So the likes of Coutinho and Icardi are good shouts.
Coutinho, who earns a whopping £240k-a-week anyway, has already proven himself in England before. Icardi, meanwhile, sits behind Neymar, Messi, and Mbappe in Paris, despite the French side paying £45m for him.
But either player would certainly perk the interest of the Toon Army.
