Tottenham Hotspur found themselves on the receiving end of a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on Monday in one of the most chaotic Premier League matches of all time.
For instance, the scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story. Spurs gave a great account of themselves despite going down to nine men and only two very late goals added gloss to the scoreline.
Despite Tottenham genuinely giving everything on the pitch, Darren Bent doesn’t understand why Spurs fans are pleased with their team following the loss to the Blues.
After the clash, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou praised the brave performances of his players and claimed they had shown exactly what they were made of.
“We were very close to getting that equaliser a couple of times,” the Spurs manager told Sky Sports after the game, as transcribed on football.london.
“It goes to show the spirit and character, which to be fair the lads have shown from day one. We’ve had all sorts of challenges to overcome, but it was just a metre too far today.”
The following day, Bent and Andy Goldstein discussed the match on talkSPORT, the latter agreeing with the Tottenham boss.
‘No way a Spurs fan can be happier than a Chelsea fan after that’
“I can understand why Spurs fan will be coming out of that game with more positives than Chelsea fans,” said Goldstein. “I think it showed me, out of the two teams, that Chelsea have got more problems.”
Bent didn’t agree, replying by saying: “No way! Did it not also show you how easy it is to play against Spurs if you get it right?”
Goldstein then responded: “They went down to nine men! Nine-men Spurs? Seriously, nine men? Show me a team that’s going to win with nine men!”

Bent continued: “No, but when Liverpool went down to nine men a few weeks ago, they looked compact, they knew what they were doing. Do you not think it’s a bit naive to keep going and going and going?
“People also keep saying Spurs almost got a point out of the game, mainly because of Son [Heung-min], [Rodrigo] Bentancur and Eric Dier.
But people are forgetting that Chelsea had more than enough opportunities to kill the game off!
“Yesterday, if you’re a Chelsea fan, you’re buzzing – there’s no way a Spurs fan can be happier than a Chelsea fan after that.
“Chelsea won 4-1! You have to look right in front of your face first and foremost. I just think it’s an absolute bonkers statement to come out and say ‘I’m really proud of my team after losing 4-1’.”

Did Bent actually watch the game?
Postecoglou’s tactics nearly paid off. Spurs nearly got it back to 2-2 as late as the 93rd minute.
Also, Tottenham have already played Liverpool and Arsenal this season. Won one, drew the other.
It’s not like going down to nine men is a common occurrence, and that’s before even mentioning two key players coming off through injury.
Everything pretty much went wrong for Spurs on the night, and yet they were still in the game until two incredibly late goals.
It’s not like Tottenham’s heads dropped early on. Quite the opposite, in fact.
And the spectacle of seeing such a high line with nine men on the pitch shows a commitment to the philosophy. They could’ve easily tried to shut up shop, but they didn’t.
