Darren Bent shocked after hearing who Chelsea could now make January move for

Darren Bent has given his reaction to reports that Chelsea could consider a move for Roberto Firmino as Mauricio Pochettino looks to address his goalscoring problems in the January transfer window.

It has been a difficult campaign for the Blues. Thankfully, Cole Palmer has been able to step up, scoring nine times in the Premier League since his move from Manchester City.

However, he is one of only three players to have scored more than three goals in the top-flight. And with that, it appears that Chelsea are open to signing another striker this month.

Darren Bent cannot see Roberto Firmino at Chelsea

In fact, one name who has now been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge is Roberto Firmino. According to The Telegraph recently, Firmino is one forward Chelsea could look at.

Firmino has only scored three goals in 17 games since his move to Saudi Arabia in the summer. Remarkably, he has actually not scored his opening game, when he bagged a hat-trick.

Of course, he left the Premier League as a Liverpool legend. The 32-year-old won a number of honours at Anfield, including the league title and the Champions League.

And because of that, Darren Bent has told talkSPORT that he just cannot see the Brazilian now making the move to Chelsea when asked about the links.

“Surprised me that,” he said.

“The reason why it surprises me is the whole Liverpool connection. Now, I know Rafa did it. But Rafa’s got thick skin, so he doesn’t really care. But Firmino to go to Chelsea, and Chelsea Liverpool, that history there, they don’t like each other at all.

“Would he go to Chelsea? I can’t see Firmino going to Chelsea, I just can’t.

“If you look at his time at Liverpool, I know he sacrificed himself because of the other two, Mane and Salah. But his link-up play and hold-up play was arguably one of the best in the league. He wasn’t prolific, was he. He scored goals. But he wasn’t prolific. Going to Chelsea, I’m not sure that’s what they need. They need someone who’s going to put the ball in the net.”

Forward will surely be keeping his options open in January

Firmino has not completed 90 minutes in the league since October. So there are no guarantees that he would be able to hit the ground running.

Much may depend on how desperate he is to leave the Saudi Pro League. If he is at all, then he would surely consider an offer from Chelsea if it came in.

His former teammate Jordan Henderson proved in the summer that ruling anything out in the transfer window is foolish. So who knows if Firmino would be prepared to put previous allegiances aside to come back to England.
