Darren Bent shares whether he thinks Arsenal can challenge Man City for the Premier League title this season

Arsenal will look to compete for the Premier League title once again after falling just short in their last two attempts.

Mikel Arteta‘s side are coming on the back of successive second-place finishes, having lost out to Manchester City on both occasions.

The Gunners will look to go one better this year and get their hands on the title for the first time since 2004, while Man City are looking to create further history by becoming the first side in Premier League history to win the trophy five times on the bounce.

Pep Guardiola‘s side have been absolutely relentless in recent years and with the Spaniard entering the final year of his contract at the club, he will perhaps be looking to finish with a flourish.

With the new season less than a week away, Darren Bent has delivered an interesting prediction involving Arsenal and Man City.

Bent, who is currently working as a pundit after hanging up his boots in 2018, believes Arsenal can give Man City a run for their money this season, although he acknowledged the Cityzens’ ability to get the job done throughout a 38-game Premier League season.

When asked if he could see anyone challenging Man City for the title, Bent said on talkSPORT (5:45 pm, August 9, 2024): “Only Arsenal. Yeah, realistically Arsenal. Potentially.

“I mean, they are so, over the course of 38 games, they are just the masters of how to get (it done).”

Comparing Arsenal and Manchester City’s transfer windows so far

Arsenal have bolstered their rearguard with the capture of Riccardo Calafiori, who joined the club from Bologna for a fee believed to be in the region of £42m after an impressive showing for Italy at Euro 2024.

The elegant defender primarily features at the heart of the defence but is also capable of deputising at left-back, making him an intriguing addition to a backline that conceded the fewest goals last season (29).

Arsenal remain locked in talks to sign Mikel Merino and could also be in the market for an attacker, with TBR Football exclusively revealing that Eddie Nketiah is wanted by Bournemouth to replace the Tottenham Hotspur-bound Dominic Solanke.

As for Man City, Julian Alvarez‘s move to Atletico Madrid has been the biggest story of the summer as the Argentine striker moved on in search of regular game time in a club-record deal worth £82m including add-ons.

Brazilian winger Savinho joined the club earlier this summer from City Football Group-owned Troyes for a reported £30.8m fee, but with City bolstered with a huge kitty from Alvarez’s sale, they could look to attack the transfer market in the coming weeks.

Bruno Guimaraes has been linked with a move to Manchester City as sources close to the player claim a late transfer can’t yet be ruled out. However, Guimaraes spoke of his desire to stay at Newcastle earlier this week, pouring cold water over reports of a transfer.

Regardless of what happens between now and the end of the transfer window, both clubs are adequately stacked to compete for the Premier League title once again.
