Darren Bent says he actually feels uneasy after Tottenham announcement this week

Darren Bent has issued his verdict on Timo Werner following the announcement this week that he has become Tottenham Hotspur’s first signing of the January transfer window.

Few would have expected Timo Werner to make a return to the Premier League this month. Of course, he had a poor time at Chelsea. And he has not exactly set the world alight since returning to RB Leipzig.

But Tottenham have sensed an opportunity as Heung-min Son goes away on international duty. Spurs have signed the Germany international on an initial loan for the rest of the season.

Darren Bent concerned about Tottenham signing Timo Werner

Ange Postecoglou has got some amazing performances from his players since his appointment. Guglielmo Vicario has perhaps been the best goalkeeper in the Premier League. Meanwhile, it has been a similar story for Destiny Udogie at left-back.

And speaking on talkSPORT, Darren Bent admitted that while Werner does not have the best track record, he is slightly concerned as an Arsenal supporter.

“He’s a threat for starters. I think that’s why it makes me uneasy. I know in front of goal for Chelsea he was appalling. But before that, you look at his record for RB Leipzig, 213 appearances, he scored 113 goals. That’s not bad, that. That’s not bad at all,” he said.

“Got to Chelsea and the Premier League, I get it, didn’t really work for him.

“One thing you can’t deny is that pace. And that pace caused problems because he’s quick. He wasn’t the most prolific at Chelsea, but there’s still something about him that makes me feel a bit uneasy.

“I think it’s a good signing for Spurs. He can play down the middle or he can play left or right. Because he’s versatile as well, and he’s only 27. He’s kind of getting to his pomp.”

Spurs right to roll the dice

Tottenham are hardly taking the biggest risk signing Werner. Of course, if it does not work out, Spurs fans will be wishing that they had brought in another attacker.

But the move is not particularly expensive for a club of Tottenham’s size. And if Werner fails to impress, Spurs are under no obligation to sign him permanently.

So it is definitely worth the roll of the dice from Postecoglou’s men. And when you consider that they are within touching distance of the top four after an awful run of luck with injuries, the likes of Arsenal and Aston Villa will probably be looking over their shoulder and wondering what Spurs could do in the second-half of the campaign.
