Darren Bent says £17m winger linked with Spurs last summer will go to the ‘very top’

Tottenham Hotspur were linked with Eberechi Eze last year, but Spurs ultimately missed out to a fellow Premier League side.

The North Londoners were said to have been tracking Eze for some time as he developed into a superb player at QPR.

Spurs scout Brian Carey was reportedly present to see him star in the West Londoners’ 3-1 win at Preston in March, according to The Sun.

The Daily Mail then reported in June that Jose Mourinho was “thought to be an admirer” of the player and that Tottenham’s interest remained going into the summer.

In the end, Eze opted for a move to Crystal Palace, who reportedly paid QPR £17million for his services.

Although the 22-year-old penned a five-year contract at Selhurst Park, former Spurs striker Darren Bent reckons he could go even further in a short space of time.

“He’s (Eze) got some quality,” he told talkSPORT.

“He’s going to go right to the very, very top. If he continues on the path that he is on, I don’t think he will be there for that long.”

TBR View:

Eze has long looked a cut above at QPR and has been finding his feet at Premier League level too, with three goals and three assists from 21 top-flight appearances.

Spurs could certainly do with more attacking firepower, given far too many of their forwards and wingers – Harry Kane and Son Heung-min aside – haven’t done tremendously well this term.

That said, a 22-year-old rising star on a Premier League contract until 2025 will command a huge fee, so it may not quite be one for the summer – perhaps more of a long-term option, see how he continues to develop at Palace.
