Darren Bent has told Sky Sports News (Friday, 1pm) that he believes Tottenham Hotspur can beat Manchester City in the last eight of the Champions League, after being drawn against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Spurs qualified for the quarter finals after beating Borussia Dortmund 4-0 over two legs. They joined Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Ajax, FC Porto, Barcelona and Juventus.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have suffered defeats to Manchester City in their last three meetings. Indeed, Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal of the game at Wembley back in October.
Former Spurs striker Bent claims that despite City being favourites, Tottenham have a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals where they will play either Juventus or Ajax.
“I think they will believe they can beat them, just because of the run they have had in the Champions League,” Bent said. “No-one gave them a chance of getting out of the group, they did that.
“They beat Dortmund over two legs, who didn’t even score a goal. They’ve beat some big hitters – bring on another one.”
City are certainly favourites and Pep Guardiola will be delighted to have drawn the north Londoners. That is because Barcelona, Juventus and Liverpool remain in the draw.
Spurs will be demoralised given that City are miles ahead in the Premier League title race. The boost of having the first leg being played at Spurs’ new stadium could be crucial.
