Former Aston Villa striker Darren Bent was full of praise for midfielder Douglas Luis after his old club booked their place in the quarter finals of the EFL Cup last night.

Bent’s former employers will host Liverpool in the last eight after goals from Anwar El Ghazi and Ahmed Elmohamady sealed the win, but he was impressed by summer signing Douglas Luiz.

On Quest, host Colin Murray and Bent suggested Luiz should have been handed the man of the match award ahead of Henri Lansbury and said: “We’ve heard Pep (Guardiola) talk about him, wishing he was still there (at Manchester City) because he is a top player. I’ve seen him many times this season absolutely control games.

“Tonight was exactly the same, getting on the ball, making things happen. He’s not just a defensive midfield player who stops attacks, and gets on the ball, he can score great goals as well. He was really impressive.”

TBR’s View – Luiz proving one of Villa’s more successful summer buys

Villa brought in so many players during the summer that it was inevitable some would settle better than others, with many coming to a new league and settling into a team also trying to find its feet in the top flight.

Luiz has adjusted better than most, showcasing an all-action style and as Bent says, proving he is more than just a simple destroyer with some eye-catching strikes.
