Darren Bent has told TalkSPORT (Tuesday, 8.10am) that he wants his old side Tottenham Hotspur to consider a move for out-of-work manager Eddie Howe this summer, despite Howe being out of work for almost a year.

Tottenham are on the lookout for a new manager, after placing Ryan Mason in interim charge until the end of the season – following the decision to axe Jose Mourinho. Spurs have been linked with numerous managers.

One that will not be on his way to Tottenham is Julian Nagelsmann. The current RB Leipzig manager has been confirmed as taking over at Bayern Munich this summer, with Nagelsmann a boyhood fan of the German champions.

The Telegraph state that candidates include Ajax’s Erik Ten Hag, Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers, England’s Gareth Southgate and Belgium’s Roberto Martinez – but ex-Spurs striker Bent wants Howe at Spurs.

“I really like Eddie Howe, he is out of work and available,” Bent said. “They need to start again, get someone who is hands-on coaching wise and I really like Eddie Howe, I think he would be a great appointment.”

TBR’s view – Howe is good, but is he Tottenham standard?

The reaction from Spurs fans to the appointment of Howe would more likely be a negative one. Howe has only ever managed two clubs – Bournemouth and Burnley. At the latter he struggled, and returned to Bournemouth.

Yes, he has earned legendary status for his work at Vitality Park. But Spurs is one of Europe’s biggest clubs. When Mourinho was appointed, a large section of fans were against it and immediately having that backlash does not help.

Spurs need to listen to the fans and appoint a manager that will please the supporters. Howe does not do that – especially because the 43-year-old was let go by Bournemouth last August.
