Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has admitted he got it wrong about Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Like a number of supporters at the time, the ex-Spur questioned the Denmark international’s summer transfer to the club.

But the 25-year-old has turned out to be a revelation so far, adding steel and energy to the team’s engine room.

Hojbjerg has been a breath of fresh air for Spurs and is probably one of the first names on Jose Mourinho’s team sheet at the moment.

It’s clear the manager is a huge fan of the player, and Bent is happy to be proven wrong.

He told talkSPORT: “I was one who questioned it. I thought, ‘If they want to go to the next level, why are they not signing better players?’

“He’s like that anchor you need in midfield, where everyone can be going chaotic around you, he’s the one who sits in front of that back four and does his job.”

Bent then referenced two former Chelsea player’s Mourinho had great trust in just like does Hojbjerg now.

“He [Mourinho] had Claude Makelele as well,” he added.

“I think the biggest one who was underrated in that role was John Obi Mikel, he did that job so well. It’s the Mourinho way.”

TBR’s View – Hojbjerg the latest Mourinho enforcer

A formidable holding midfielder has always been a staple of a Jose Mourinho team, and it looks like Hojbjerg is the latest in a long line for the Portuguese.

It’s been a sensational start for £101,000-a-week warrior Hojbjerg (Spotrac), who clearly has the personality and character Mourinho admires in players to go along with his actual footballing abilities.
