Darren Bent feels getting relegated to the Championship may help Dele Alli
TalkSPORT pundit Darren Bent feels that beleaguered Everton man Dele Alli may benefit from playing Championship football next season.
The Toffees signed Alli from Tottenham on a two-and-a-half-year deal for a fee that could reach £40m (BBC Sport) on transfer deadline day in January.
But the 25-year-old is yet to start a game under Frank Lampard and already looks out-of-favour at Goodison Park.
The move to Merseyside was meant to galvanise the England international and the fresh start was hoped to reignite his career that had significantly stalled.
Dele Alli to rebuild in the Championship?
Since joining Everton, Alli is part of a side that has become engulfed in a relegation dogfight and with 11 Premier League games remaining, it’s hard to see Alli finding a way into Lampard’s starting line-up.
Speaking on talkSPORT this morning, former England and Tottenham striker Bent has given a damming assessment of where Alli is currently at in his career.
Bent said: “I thought Alli going to Everton would kick him back into life… it hasn’t happened.
“Maybe Dele Alli needs to go down a division into the Championship.
“What Premier League club would buy him?”
Alli couldn’t be any further from the England setup and after playing such a pivotal role in the Three Lions run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the man with 37 international caps to his name could be plying his trade in the Championship when this winter’s tournament in Qatar kicks off.
Alli made a name for himself in the Football League with MK Dons and maybe a drop down to the second tier and rediscovering his confidence and appetite for the game is just what he needs.
Because as it stands, Dele Alli’s career is fizzling out without trace and he needs to find a way to turn his fortunes around and fast.
