Darren Bent feels that Tottenham missed an opportunity by not making an elite signing in the summer, as it could have taken them to the next level.
Spurs broke a streak of two windows without any signings by bring in four new faces to the club.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side broke their transfer record for Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, while Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham and Giovani Lo Celso (loan) also joined from Paris Saint-Germain.
The North London club also added Jack Clarke from Leeds United, but he’s returned to Elland Road on loan.
Ex-Spurs striker Bent feels that Spurs were just one major signing away from taking a big step.
The Daily Mail reported in August that Spurs rejected the chance to swap Christian Eriksen with Juventus’ playmaker Paulo Dybala.
Meanwhile, the Mirror previously explained that Spurs pulled the plug on a swoop for Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho due to a mega £40million fee for a loan deal.
“I thought at the start of the season if they could have just got Dybala over the line or Coutinho one of those real statement signings… when a real top player comes into the dressing room that gives everyone else a lift,” Bent said on Sky Sports’ Debate Show (10:30, 23 September).
“If they could have got one of them over the line it would have made everyone look at Tottenham like okay they are trying to take their club to another level.”

TBR’s View:
The arrival of Ndombele to the Spurs midfield certainly was a statement in many respect, while the club also managed to add some real quality youngsters to the squad.
The Spurs group finished as runners-up in the Champions League last season after losing to Liverpool in the final and do have players capable of winning trophies.
They just need their first piece of silverware under Pochettino to really boost morale and then there should be no stopping them.
