Darren Bent claims Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks a ‘shadow’ of his former self

Talksport pundit and former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has slammed Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for his recent performances.

Speaking following another blank from the Gabon star, Bent believes there has been a drop in performance levels from the Arsenal skipper ever since he signed his new deal at the club.

Aubameyang is the highest earner at The Emirates. However, Bent believes the new contract may have had an impact on the 31-year-old’s performances this season.

“There has been a drop-off. You look at his form in the semi-final and the final of the FA Cup last season, the Community Shield and his performance against Fulham – he was arguably one of the best strikers in the Premier League, probably THE best.

“But since he signed that new contract, it might be a coincidence, but he’s looked a shadow of himself.

“Listen, confidence is massive in a striker. But I think it’s even the workrate as well. You remember, he was putting shifts up and down, he was all over the place, but he’s been nowhere near that level recently.”

Aubameyang has failed to score since the opening day win at Fulham and has only registered one assist during the five games since then.

Arsenal fans might not want to hear it but there’s no hiding behind it, Aubameyang has been poor of late.

He was a passenger in the game at Man City and once again last night, he was barely involved barring the odd run in wide areas.

At the money he is on and the fanfare around his new deal in the summer, he needs to be doing much more. He’s so important to Arsenal and if he isn’t firing, the Gunners can forget about Champions League football.
