Darragh MacAnthony has perhaps issued an intriguing response when asked during a video on his own YouTube channel whether Peterborough United are looking at Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty.
Docherty is in a difficult situation at Ibrox. He returned to the Gers in the summer after an outstanding loan spell at Shrewsbury Town. And he appeared to have a real chance of breaking into Steven Gerrard’s plans.
However, he has not played for Rangers since August. The 23-year-old has suffered due to the brilliant form that some of his teammates have shown this term.
It did appear that Docherty may have had the chance to leave the Light Blues again in the summer. MacAnthony claimed in another video on his YouTube channel that Posh agreed a loan for Scotland-based midfielder who had been on loan and thrived in England’s third tier the previous year.
The deal – which would have included a £750,000 future fee clause – fell through as the player did not want to leave.
Docherty was not named by MacAnthony. But he is certainly the obvious candidate that comes to mind given all the information provided.
And in his latest video, the Peterborough chairman was asked whether his club are looking at the youngster ahead of the January transfer window.
“We’re looking at loads of players,” he told his YouTube channel. “I’m not going to disrespect another club and talk about their player. Rangers have got some terrific players. We’re always looking at various players who could improve our squad, improve our team. That’s what we want to do.”
It must obviously be noted that there is clearly nothing concrete suggesting that a bid for Docherty is on the cards. But it is perhaps telling that MacAnthony did not dismiss the idea altogether as he did when other players were suggested at other stages of the video.
And given that Docherty ticks the same boxes as the player MacAnthony nearly signed in the summer, it may not be too far-fetched to suggest that there may be some interest there.
Admittedly, it may simply be a case of putting two and two together and coming up with five. But perhaps it should not be a huge surprise if Peterborough do attempt to sign Docherty from Rangers in the future.
