Danny Welbeck injury suggests Everton dodged a bullet after reported summer interest

This summer Everton were linked with a move for former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck. The England international was a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Arsenal and Everton needed a new striker this summer.

Football.London reported in June that Everton were leading the queue of suitors for his services. However, the Liverpool Echo suggested Welbeck was not considered a priority target for the Toffees.

However, Everton did not turn whatever interest they had in the 42-cap international into anything concrete.

Watford, in the end, did. The Hornets signed Welbeck on a three-year deal in the summer amid rumours (Evening Standard) of a potential £100,000-a-week wage.

It was always a gamble. Welbeck’s career has been blighted by injury in recent years and Watford knew that, hence why the Standard reported the player’s wages would be made up of many performance-related add-ons.

Everton were clearly not ready to take that gamble and instead went with potential in the signature of Moise Kean from Juventus.

Now it seems that was the right call. Welbeck went down early on in the weekend clash with Tottenham Hotspur and suffered a serious hamstring injury. Now, as reported by the Daily Mail, he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

He has torn his hamstring and it appears he is set to miss months of action, potentially ruling him out until 2020.

For Watford, who are bottom of the league without a win this season, it is a bitter blow. For Everton, it looks like a bullet dodged.
