Danny Rose says Tottenham would’ve won the Champions League if they didn’t sell ‘amazing’ £11m player

It’s been more than four years now, but it does still feel as though Tottenham are still slightly hung up on that 2019 Champions League final.

It’s the closest Spurs have ever come to winning the biggest trophy in club football, and they left that game with so many regrets.

Whether or not Lucas Moura should’ve started instead of Harry Kane remains a topic of huge debate among Spurs fans, and now, Danny Rose has given an alternate view on how Spurs could’ve won that final.

Speaking on the Official Tottenham Hotspur Podcast, Danny Rose stated that Spurs would’ve won that final if they hadn’t decided to sell Mousa Dembele in the January transfer window for £11m.

Dembele could’ve won the Champions League for Tottenham

Rose gave his verdict on the midfielder.

“I would say Luka and then I would say Dembele would be a very close second. He was absolutely amazing. For me, if he hadn’t left in January we would’ve won the final in the Champions League. Obviously in January it’s not in anyone’s thoughts we’d get to the final, but that’s how influential he was for us, if he played in the final we would’ve won that game,” Rose said.

Improvement

It has to be said that Rose may have a point here.

While it’s difficult for one player to completely turn a Champions League final, Dembele is certainly the type of player who can flip a game on its head.

It goes without saying that Dembele would’ve been an upgrade on a young Harry Winks in the midfield that day, and maybe, just maybe, Spurs could’ve beaten Liverpool if the Belgian had stuck around.

Of course, it’s all if, buts and maybes, but it has to be said that Spurs would’ve had a much better chance against Liverpool that year if Dembele had been on the pitch.
