Danny Rose has waxed lyrical about the quality of Newcastle United teammate Jonjo Shelvey, while insisting that when he’s on form there isn’t anyone that can match him across the Premier League in his position.
Rose, 29, is currently on loan at St James’ Park from Tottenham and he made six appearances for the Magpies before football was suspended due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
Shelvey has been one of the key players in Steve Bruce’s side so far this season, despite having injury problems along the way.
The central midfielder has five goals in 20 appearances this campaign, which makes him the club’s second-highest goalscorer.
He was signed for £12million (BBC) back in January 2016 from Swansea city and has gone through patches of brilliant form in a Newcastle shirt.
Rose has given a glowing verdict on Newcastle midfielder Shelvey.
“Jonjo for me is the type of player, when on his game, that I would pay to watch. He’s absolutely brilliant in that central position,” Rose told the Chronicle.
“The way he dictates the game and his range of passing is the best in the Premier League.
“For me, he is absolutely brilliant. When he is playing in that deep lying role and dictating play, there’s nobody that touches him in this league for me. As I say he is just sheer class.”

TBR’s View:
Shelvey is far too inconsistent to be put into the conversation of the best deep-lying playmakers in the Premier League and simply doesn’t perform to his best regularly enough to warrant that.
But the Englishman certainly has plenty of individual ability and he can help dictate possession for his side when he gets the ball.
There is a desire from supporters for Newcastle to play a more exciting brand of football and Shelvey should be central to those plans in the midfield.
