Danny Murphy would take Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey to Qatar World Cup

BBC pundit Danny Murphy has revealed that he would pick Aston Villa youngster Jacob Ramsey in England’s World Cup squad.

The 20-year-old has made 29 appearances for the Villains this season and has six Premier League goals to his name.

Since Steven Gerrard was appointed as the club’s new manager in November, following the sacking of Dean Smith, the Liverpool legend has shown great faith in Ramsey.

Ramsey has started 18 of the 19 Premier League games since the former Rangers manager took the reins at Villa Park.

After making six Premier League starts last season, Ramsey has elevated his game to new heights his season and looks to be loving playing alongside Barcelona loanee Phillipe Coutinho, who arrived in January.

Villa’s number 41 was handed his England Under-21s debut in October and he scored his first goal for the Young Lions with a screamer against Andorra during the March international break.

But with the winter World Cup in Qatar only seven months away, former Liverpool, Tottenham and England midfielder Murphy has explained why Ramsey would be given a spot in his side, if he was in Gareth Southgate’s shoes.

In his column for the Daily Mail, Murphy said: “I’d include Aston Villa’s young midfielder Jacob Ramsey as a wildcard.

“England have secure, defensively-minded midfielders in Kalvin Phillips, Jordan Henderson and Declan Rice.

“For balance, they can afford to add the likes of Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher and Ramsey, who have creativity.”

But with there only being two more international breaks (June and September) before Southgate selects his England squad, time may be running out for Ramsey.

However, if he continues to play a starring role in the Villa side until the end of the season and kicks on even further at the start of the next campaign, Jacob Ramsey may leave Southgate no choice but to give him a chance.
