Danny Murphy urges Liverpool to make Erling Haaland bid this summer

Danny Murphy has told the Daily Mail that if Liverpool are able to break the bank on a new striker this summer, they should try and make a move for Erling Haaland.

Reds fans would be forgiven for already having one eye on the summer. Domestically, it has been a really difficult campaign for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Mo Salah is actually well on course to smash his goalscoring return from last season. And Roberto Firmino is only a few behind last year as well.

But it does appear that the front three – including Sadio Mane – has struggled a lot more often during this campaign. And remarkably, only two other players have scored more than twice in the top flight this term.

Murphy believes that a new number nine needs to be on the shopping list this summer. And he has implored the champions to set their sights on arguably the best in the business right now.

“Liverpool badly need a couple of players to make the team better, not six rarely-used squad members,” he told the Daily Mail.

“Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Firmino and Jota are a fantastic quartet but Liverpool need a top-line number nine to become a goal machine again.

“If Erling Haaland is available, why not be ambitious and try to break the bank for him? His arrival wouldn’t make Firmino redundant, just give Liverpool more options.”

Haaland’s next move is going to be a fascinating one. Given how Borussia Dortmund have operated in recent years, it is difficult to see the 20-year-old staying at the Westfalenstadion for more than a couple of years.

He has already scored 29 goals across the Bundesliga and Champions League. So Dortmund will be bracing themselves for a raft of offers this summer. And according to the Daily Mail, he has a buyout clause of £90 million.

Liverpool would arguably be foolish not to make a bid. But it seems likely that all of the other European powerhouses will be thinking along similar lines.
