Danny Murphy thinks he knows why Daniel Levy hasn’t tried to sign Victor Osimhen for Tottenham

Daniel Levy has come under a lot of criticism from Tottenham Hotspur fans in this transfer window.

Spurs have had a very difficult season so far. Injuries have really troubled them, and that is the reason why they are currently 16th in the Premier League table.

Despite that, Tottenham failed to sign a single outfield player in the whole of January, and it was only on Sunday morning that they announced the arrival of Kevin Danso.

Ange Postecoglou’s side still need a new attacker before the window shuts, but it’s not going to be Victor Osimhen. Danny Murphy thinks he knows why.

Danny Murphy explains why he thinks Daniel Levy has not signed Victor Osimhen for Tottenham

Osimhen is up there with the best strikers in Europe.

The Napoli star was heavily linked with several clubs in the Premier League last summer, including Tottenham, but Postecoglou chose to sign Dominic Solanke instead.

The Englishman is currently injured, and Spurs are back on the market for a new forward. But, so far, all they’ve faced is rejections.

Randal Kolo Muani snubbed Tottenham not too long ago, while Bayern Munich and France striker Mathys Tel turned down a move to Spurs too recently.

Osimhen is a player most Tottenham fans would love to see, but Murphy thinks that deal has not been pursued because of Daniel Levy’s reluctance to pay big wages.

The pundit, who used to play for Spurs, wrote in the Daily Mail: “Spurs need to sprinkle their team with stardust to compete at the elite level and that means breaking their wage structure to recruit world-class players who are at their peak today.

Victor Osimhen is an example. He is 26 and would have made an immediate impact, even on loan from Napoli. Levy would have winced at the wage demands and so the Nigerian striker is now on loan at Galatasaray.

“Spurs pay significant transfer fees but that’s misleading. Liverpool don’t spend as much on players as Manchester United or Chelsea, but their top earners will be on a par with any other Premier League club.

“Manchester City swooped for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Egyptian striker Omar Marmoush to get them out of a hole. I’d wager his salary is bigger than anyone’s salary at Spurs.”

Tottenham’s current wage bill

Tottenham’s wage bill is incomparable to other top sides in the Premier League.

Not a single Spurs player pockets over £200,000-a-week, which is great from a business point of view, but every elite footballer would demand more than that.

James Maddison£170,000-a-week
Cristian Romero£165,000-a-week
Timo Werner (loan)£165,000-a-week
Dejan Kulusevski£110,000-a-week

Tottenham’s current payroll, according to Spotrac, is £117,286,000. That ranks them seventh among all the Premier League clubs – below the rest of the traditional top six and also Aston Villa.

West Ham United, who rank eighth, spend just under £5 million less than the above figure.

Until Levy starts paying big money in wages, Tottenham will struggle to sign the best players. That means they will struggle to compete with the other top clubs on the pitch as well.
