Danny Murphy has suggested that Liverpool look towards Jordan Henderson as a possible option at centre-back amid their injury crisis.
With first-choice Virgil van Dijk already sidelined with a long-term injury, the Reds were dealt the blow during the current international break that his usual centre-back partner Joe Gomez also picked up an injury that forced him out of the England squad.
There is no timeframe yet on his potential return, but it looks like the Merseyside giants will need to find a new solution in the heart of their defence.
They can call upon Joel Matip once again now he’s regained his fitness and midfielder Fabinho has impressed as a stand-in centre-back already this season, but the former has a horrid record with injuries.
Meanwhile, Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams are two inexperienced centre-halves that manager Jurgen Klopp has given a brief taste of first-team football too.
Murphy has claimed that central midfielder Henderson could be the right fit to step back into defence if needed.
“I think Henderson could play there [at centre-back]. He’s a physical presence, quick, he’s not stupid and erratic with his tackling,” Murphy told talkSPORT.
“He’s not somebody even in midfield who goes around getting silly red cards or putting himself on the line, he’s controlled. And he’s a leader. He’s disciplined enough to play there. I’d seriously be thinking of playing Henderson there, depending on the opposition.”

TBR’s View:
Henderson, who earns £140,000-a-week (Spotrac), has been a real driving force in Liverpool’s success in the past couple of years in the heart of midfield.
The 30-year-old England international is certainly disciplined and reads the game well, but isn’t blessed with brilliant pace and it would be a danger seeing him try hold the backline against some of the attackers in the Premier League.
He is the Liverpool captain that offers so much in the centre of the park for his side and losing that doesn’t seem out outweigh him stepping into an unfamiliar defensive role.
