Danny Murphy still shocked Liverpool are about to sign Cody Gakpo
Danny Murphy has told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel that he is still shocked to see Cody Gakpo is on his way to Liverpool ahead of the January transfer window, insisting that it is a wonderful signing for the Reds.
Gakpo’s imminent move to Anfield seemed to come almost out of nowhere. He has been absolutely outstanding for PSV Eindhoven this season, scoring 13 goals and contributing 17 assists.
Meanwhile, he scored three times for the Netherlands at the World Cup. So he has certainly been in brilliant form this term. However, it appeared that he may be heading elsewhere in the Premier League.
Murphy stunned to see Gakpo on his way to Liverpool
The Guardian reports that he was heavily linked with Manchester United. Of course, a move to Old Trafford would see the forward link up with compatriot Erik ten Hag.
But it now seems that he is heading for Anfield. The Guardian reports that Liverpool have agreed a £37 million fee with PSV for the 23-year-old. The fee could ultimately rise up to £50 million.
Liverpool accelerated their pursuit of the youngster in the last few days. And it seems that there was very little time between the speculation starting up and the move becoming incredibly close.
It has been a whirlwind for many Liverpool fans. And Murphy has admitted that he is still pinching himself over the fact that Gakpo is Merseyside-bound.
“Listen, I think Virgil van Dijk will have waded in on this one. I think Virgil’s been in his ear, telling him what an amazing club it is. But every Liverpool fan, if they didn’t know about him and they haven’t seen much of him, should be excited,” he told Ferdinand’s YouTube channel.
“I’m really excited by it. Desperately what we need now, especially with the injuries to Jota and Diaz. I’m actually shocked still. I spoke to a friend of mine at Liverpool today who couldn’t believe it. A friend of mine, a physio there, and he couldn’t believe he was coming in. It’s just a wonderful signing at a time when Liverpool need a little boost.”
It will evoke memories of the deal for Luis Diaz at the start of this year. During the previous January transfer window, there did not appear to be any time between Liverpool joining the race for the Colombian and getting a move done.
That has proved to be an inspired decision. When Diaz has played, he has been brilliant for the Reds. And he is going to play a big role for years to come.
Gakpo is arriving in amazing form. And he will relish the chance to join Liverpool’s forward line and take his game to the next level.
It is little wonder that Murphy is so optimistic about the move.
