Danny Murphy shares what he doesn’t like about Tottenham boss Conte

Danny Murphy has told talkSPORT (14/2; 10:08) that he is not a fan of Antonio Conte suggesting that Tottenham Hotspur have a long way to go following defeats, and claimed that supporters would have expected more from the Italian so far.

Conte has made an underwhelming start to life in North London. There have been promising signs. And the belief from the fans remains unwavering.

However, results have not picked up. In fact, the honeymoon period looks to now be over. They have now lost five of their last eight in all competitions. And they have been beaten in their last three Premier League fixtures.

The latest came on Sunday as Tottenham suffered a 2-0 defeat to Wolves. Conte spoke afterwards of the long path that lies ahead of his side.

Some may feel that that is a fair assessment. However, Murphy insisted that he would prefer the Italian to speak about how poor they were in games such as the one against Bruno Lage’s men.

“The analysis comes of, ‘we’re not what we thought we were’. I think sometimes he does go a little bit overboard in his post-match press conferences, just giving himself a little bit of an excuse for the way they’ve been playing. I don’t like that, I think he should say it how it is,” he told talkSPORT.

“Because of his CV, Tottenham fans would have expected a little bit more, that’s fair.”

Tottenham fans know how imperative Conte being a success is

Obviously, Tottenham’s most successful period since the turn of the Millennium came when they turned to a young, somewhat unproven manager at the elite level in Mauricio Pochettino.

But Pochettino was ultimately unable to get Tottenham across the line.

Appointing Jose Mourinho appeared to be a smart move given what Pochettino was just unable to do. Unfortunately, that did not work out either with the Portuguese struggling to recapture the magic from the early stages of his managerial career.

Conte has been appointed at a time when he is considered one of the best in the world. If he cannot deliver with Tottenham, there will be a serious concern regarding where they go next.

Conte is surely right that Tottenham are a long way off where they need to be, despite Murphy’s criticism.
