Danny Murphy believes Arsenal defender William Saliba is going to be a ‘superstar’.

Murphy has been picking his Premier League Team of the Season so far and named the Arsenal defender in his XI.

The Gunners have endured a tough patch of form over the festive period, having picked up just one point from their last three league games.

Mikel Arteta’s side sat at the top of the table on Christmas Day but have since slipped down to fourth place. That has largely been down to their struggles in the final third, having netted just twice in their last three outings.

Despite their attacking struggles, William Saliba continues to impress at centre-back. Indeed, his partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes has even been labelled the best in England’s top flight.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a brilliant debut campaign last time out and seems to have taken his game to another level this season.

And Murphy believes that to be the case, stating that Arsenal have a real gem on their hands when it comes to Saliba.

Murphy says Saliba will be a ‘superstar’ for Arsenal

Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy named Saliba and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk as the two best centre-backs in the league so far this term.

The pundit was full of praise for the Arsenal defender, lauding him for his composure and ability on the ball.

“He’s gone up again,” Murphy said. “He’s going to be a superstar that kid.

“He’s so cool and calm. Quick. Good on the ball.”

Saliba has gone from strength to strength over the past year at Arsenal. The Frenchman was originally snapped up back in 2019 but spent three years on loan in Ligue 1.

The extra time to develop as a first-team player benefitted the defender as he returned to Arsenal ready to make the step-up to Premier League football.

His injury towards the end of last season completely derailed Arsenal’s push for the title.

That’s how important Saliba is to this current Arsenal side and they will certainly be hoping he avoids any setbacks this time around.
