Danny Murphy says 47-year-old manager linked with Tottenham is “too defensive” for them

Danny Murphy has claimed that Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito Santo would be the wrong fit at Tottenham.

Spurs, who have interim manager Ryan Mason in charge until the end of the season, are yet to announce who will be the full-time successor to Jose Mourinho.

The north London club are being linked with an entire host of managerial names.

One man linked last month was Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito Santo, with the speculation printed just a few days before Mourinho’s sacking.

The Daily Express reported that Spurs were eyeing the 47-year-old Wolves man as a potential Mourinho successor, and that chairman Daniel Levy is a “major fan” of his.

Pundit Murphy has though claimed he would be the wrong appointment for Spurs due to his tactical approach.

“Too pragmatic. Too defensive. The only way he got success was being really hard to beat and being pragmatic, which is fine he did a good job at Wolves,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

TBR’s View:

Nuno has been at the helm at Molineux Stadium since 2017, overseeing a dramatic change.

He built a team that stormed Championship promotion, and it’s been confirmed that next year will be the club’s fourth consecutive season in the Premier League

The Portuguese boss guided his team to back-to-back seventh-placed league finishes in the last two seasons, albeit there has been a slight drop off this campaign.

His main strength has been the way he’s managed to galvanise a squad of players together to built an identity at Molineux. His teams are usually extremely difficult to beat, with a trusted 3-4-3 formation at the heart of the success, and a crop of young talent.

However, Murphy feels that Nuno’s style won’t suit the attacking football Spurs fans crave.
