Danny Murphy reacts to Raphinha display in Leeds win
Danny Murphy labelled Raphinha the man of the match following Leeds United’s win over Watford on Saturday – in comments made on Match of the Day.
What’s the story?
The Whites have their first Premier League win of the campaign after beating the Hornets at Elland Road.
Diego Llorente scored the only goal of the contest as he produced a smart finish from a corner.
Leeds should have won by a much greater margin, such was their dominance in the first-half. And one of those who really stood out for Marcelo Bielsa’s side was the Brazilian winger.
No Leeds player looked more dangerous or more likely to make something happen than the 24-year-old.
And while it was one of his teammates who broke the deadlock for a change, Murphy suggested that Raphinha was still the one who stole the show.
“Raphinha by the way, off the right-hand side, what a player he is,” he told Match of the Day.
“Man of the match again. He was coming in, doing his work off the ball as well. He caused them all sorts of problems.”
Raphinha one of the players who should leave Leeds fans feeling hopeful about avoiding second-season syndrome
Leeds still have plenty of work to do. They are only three points above the bottom three in the Premier League.
And their struggles to put Watford away will be a concern with Patrick Bamford sidelined for the time-being.
But having players such as Raphinha make Leeds suffering from second-season syndrome hard to imagine.
The wide-man has been outstanding, scoring three times. Meanwhile, high-quality players such as Rodrigo, Jack Harrison and Dan James are yet to reach top gear.
Leeds face a crucial handful of games after the international break. But the situation looks a lot better now that they have backed up their bright displays with that first league win.
