Danny Murphy makes Spurs job claim amid Brendan Rodgers reports

Danny Murphy has told the Daily Mail that the Tottenham Hotspur job is not currently one of the opportunities Brendan Rodgers simply could not turn down as he continues to attract plaudits.

The Leicester City boss is well on his way to guiding the Foxes to a top four spot in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, they host Manchester United in an FA Cup quarter-final tie on Sunday.

The work he has done at the King Power Stadium is not escaping attention. The Daily Mail reported last month that Rodgers has admirers at Spurs amid doubts over Jose Mourinho’s future.

His situation has become a talking point once again following a week in which Tottenham lost the North London derby and were knocked out of the Europa League in extraordinary circumstances.

But Murphy clearly has his doubts over whether Daniel Levy would be able to attract Rodgers. He has suggested that there is little reason for the Leicester boss to want to move anytime soon.

“I think he learned a lot from being at Liverpool,” he told the Daily Mail. “Towards the end, maybe he was too public in highlighting disagreements in recruitment and probably realises now it can be better to keep your own counsel even if you think you’re right.

“I said at the time Everton had missed a trick by choosing Marco Silva rather than Rodgers. Now there aren’t many clubs he’d leave Leicester for.

“There are some jobs you can’t turn down but I wouldn’t see Spurs as one of them. He’d need to spend a year or two sorting out some of their problems even to get to the levels Leicester are at now.”

Spurs need to make a big statement with their next managerial appointment. They do not necessarily need to get the biggest name available. But they do need a boss who thrives when there is a long-term project.

Mourinho has not had the immediate impact to vindicate the decision to appoint him after Mauricio Pochettino’s departure.

In fairness, it would be wrong to write Mourinho off entirely as well. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to see the Portuguese guiding the club back to the level they were at a few years ago.

Rodgers has proved that he can elevate teams. So if there is any chance of bringing him in, Tottenham must be prepared to do all they can.
