Danny Murphy lauds Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after Tottenham win 2-0
Match of the Day 2 pundit Danny Murphy raved about Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after Tottenham defeated Wolves 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Dane added to Harry Kane’s goal to put the seal on a win.
Spurs are still on the hunt for a Europa League place and Sunday’s win will certainly give them the confidence to finish the season with a flourish.
Hojbjerg cost Tottenham £15 million last summer and he’s been a revelation since checking in at the North London-based outfit.
The 25-year-old has played 51 games in all competitions this season and of all the Tottenham players, he will relish the summer break more than most.
His performance against Nuno Espirito Santo’s team didn’t suggest a player who was showing signs of fatigue though and Murphy was mightily impressed.
The ex-Spurs man told Match of the Day 2: “Hojbjerg, I thought he was terrific today. I was saying before the game that I don’t think he does enough creatively. He’s been pigeon-holed into this midfield role where he’s the destroyer and the one who gets around.
“I thought against Wolves he showed some moments of creativity and moments of class. So he’s clearly capable of it.
“He played with that bit more freedom and creativity that I’ve not seen him do too many times. Hojbjerg showed me things in his game that I didn’t know he was capable of.”
TBR View: Hojbjerg must be in the discussion for Signing of the Season
Others will have a say but Tottenham added a real gem when they tempted Southampton into a sale for their midfield maestro.
Under Jose Mourinho, the player who earns around £100,000-a-week was given a more pragmatic approach, with the ex-boss tasking him with setting the tempo.
Ryan Mason has given him some freedom though and taken the shackles off somewhat. His role in the last few weeks has been more box-to-box and it’s a duty he can fulfil with aplomb.
Hojbjerg has been a really good signing for Tottenham and very few in the Premier League have enjoyed such an impact from the summer transfer window of 2020.
