Danny Murphy has shared what he has noticed about Kobbie Mainoo in the second-half of some games, after the Manchester United starlet was included in the senior England squad for the first time for this international break.
The form of Kobbie Mainoo has been one of the main positives in what has been a difficult season for Erik ten Hag and Manchester United.
Heading into this campaign, the 18-year-old had only made three appearances for United. And he actually did not make his first appearance of this season until the end of November. But since then, he has established himself as one of the most exciting talents in the Premier League.
Mainoo was exceptional while on the pitch during Manchester United’s enthralling FA Cup tie with Liverpool at the weekend. And his reward, it seems, is a promotion to the senior England squad ahead of this international break.
Many have insisted that Mainoo deserves to be in the England fold.
Danny Murphy has concern about Kobbie Mainoo despite amazing Manchester United form
Speaking on talkSPORT, Danny Murphy has suggested that he feels that it may be a bit early for the teenager to come into the Three Lions’ squad – particularly as he appears to still be finding his feet physically in senior football.

“It’s a chance for him to be around the senior boys and see how he adapts. England squads, when you go, you see so much in training, of the levels of players, and how quickly the young ones adapt. Now, you’re right, the fact that he’s been at Manchester United and seen some of the superstars they’ve got and seamlessly fitted and embraced the opportunity suggests he’ll do the same with England,” he said.
“But I am with Simon, it’s probably a little bit too early, even if there was an injury or two, to throw him in at that level. But he is a super talent. Calm, he’s assured, he’s got great feet. I think he’s played a lot of games. There’s certain games where second-halves, he fades away a little, understandably. Because gaining that match physicality and experience comes with time. But he is a star in the making, the boy. A real, real talent.”
England call-up appears to be the right move ahead of Euro 2024
In an ideal world, Gareth Southgate would probably wish that he had more time to look at Mainoo. However, Euro 2024 is just around the corner right now. And Southgate is running out of time to look at those who are closer to the periphery of the squad. Mainoo meanwhile, has almost come from nowhere.
If Mainoo – who has completed 90 minutes four times in his last eight league appearances – does go to the tournament this summer, he is unlikely to play a prominent role. But these upcoming friendlies may provide an indication as to whether he is ready to contribute at a major event.
He certainly has the talent. But clearly, there is a concern about whether he can handle the demands at this stage of his career.
