Danny Murphy believes that Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri proved in the Merseyside derby that he should be playing more.

The Reds continued their dazzling form to dismantle neighbours Everton 5-2 at Anfield in the Premier League fixture.

Shaqiri scored the second Liverpool goal with a tidy left-footed finish after running in behind the Everton backline.

The Swiss attacker was promoted to the starting XI in midweek and it was just his fifth senior appearance of the season.

He did find himself unavailable with a calf injury during October, but there is no doubt he’s fallen down the pecking order and really struggled for minutes.

The 28-year-old made the perfect impact on his first start of the season and will hope it can be a platform for more opportunities moving forward.

BBC pundit Murphy insists that Shaqiri sent the ideal message to his manager Jurgen Klopp with his quality display against Everton.

“Shaqiri deserved his goal, he was tremendous considering he’s hardly played this season. Showed the manager that he should be playing more I think,” Murphy told BBC One programme Match of the Day (11:05pm, 4 December).

TBR’s View:

Shaqiri completed 90 minutes in the win over Everton and was extremely energetic for someone with a complete lack of match fitness.

The left-footed winger wanted to make the most of his chance on the pitch and did just that, with his goal a highlight of his quality in the final third.

He showed great movement during the contest and along with Divock Origi made a huge impression following a promotion to the starting XI.

Shaqiri is always going to play second fiddle to Mohamed Salah in the battle for the wide right position, but with such a hectic fixture list in December it’s great for Klopp to know he has options to rotate.
