Danny Murphy has caused a bit of a stir by suggesting Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane would get into the Liverpool starting XI over Roberto Firmino.
The former midfielder was speaking on talkSPORT about where the England captain would go if he ever left the north Londoners.
Murphy, who played for both clubs in his career, reckons the 26-year-old’s goalscoring prowess would see him theoretically displace Brazilian superstar Firmino in the Reds’ starting XI.
He said: “I think Harry Kane would get in Liverpool’s team ahead of Firmino because I think he’d score more goals. I love Firmino but he’s not Harry Kane.”
Kane is most definitely a prolific goalscorer, having notched 201 in his professional club career so far and a further 28 for England.
By contrast Firmino has scored 126 and 13 for Brazil.
As most will know though, Firmino is very much an untypical number nine at Liverpool in that he selflessly drops deep to allow the likes of Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to get in behind.
And of course, Firmino used to be an attacking midfielder and has effectively learned a new role later on in his career.
Liverpool fans react
Many Liverpool fans weren’t having Murphy’s suggestion that Kane would get into the Liverpool team.
While he is undoubtedly a world-class striker, Reds supporters adore Firmino and firmly believe his all-round game simply cannot be replicated:
Clearly doesn’t know what Bobby does

Haha no chance Kane gets in ahead of Firmino. Kane wouldn’t last 10 seconds in Klopp’s system.

Wouldn’t put Kane in our team. There’s no compromise with Kane, everything must got through him or he’ll start wandering if it doesn’t, can’t be like that in our team.

Haha hahahahahaua oh wow. Has he watched Liverpool play? Kane can do nothing that Firmino does

No chance! Firmino makes that front 3 what it is. He’s irreplaceable in Klopp’s systems

No Liverpool fan would want Kane over Bobby he makes the system klopp uses work

Kane’s good at what he does but can’t do what Firmino does. Good striker in the right team, but not at Liverpool .

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 What is he smokin

Kane is class but he wouldn’t fit in with our system! Firmino makes the other two tick!

Strongly disagree. Firmino is a tremendous link up man and creates numerous chances for Salah and Mane in addition to the goals he gets. Kane would likely score more but wouldn’t create nearly as much for Salah and Mane. They’re stronger together as a trio.

If kane replaces firmino then we might as well lose salah and mane too
— Karan_66 (@karankk88) 13 November 2019
Not a chance he gets in ahead of bobby. No chance in hell!!
— Simonroberts (@theboyroberts) 13 November 2019
That is the most daft thing Spud has ever said.
Kane is a quality player no question, but Bobby Firmino is vital to how #LFCs front 3 play. It is his selfless play and intelligent positional play that creates the space for Mane and Salah.

Sorry disagree here . Bobby is a different player. Bring others into the game far better than Kane who is agreed is a great scorer of goals but is not a creator of superb goals
