Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills has been sharing his concerns for the club if they fail to win promotion this season.
The West Yorkshire side have looked strong again this season but recent defeats to Charlton and Millwall has seen them go into the most recent international break fifth.
Mills, speaking on talkSPORT, explained his fear for the club’s financial position should they fail to win promotion this term.
“It’s a massive gamble. I think the wage bill for them at the moment for Leeds, including the manager and his staff, is £35-£40 million. That’s big for the Championship. They need to get up this season. If they don’t, you start to worry again.
“The owner has just come out and done a rare interview and said there might be new investment, looking to sell the club, we’ve known that for some time.
“But if they don’t get up this season, with that sort of wagebill, I know some of those players are maybe on loan and of course the manager and his team, it’ll be difficult times again for Leeds.”
TBR’s View
Mills knows all too well about the financial problems that have hit Leeds United in the past. He was sold off in the Elland Road firesale during the Peter Risdale era.
Leeds chairman Radrizzani spoke to The Times this week and admitted that Leeds’ wage bill is not currently sustainable in the Championship.

The hope is that Leeds either win promotion or get further investment, as has been rumoured regarding Qatar Sports Investment and their potential interest in the club. Both of those eventualities would leave Leeds looking secure financially long into the future.
Leeds fans will undoubtedly have faith in Marcelo Bielsa’s ability to bring promotion to the club. Mills himself made it clear he thinks Leeds are the best team in the Championship.
But if they fail, cuts will have to be made which could surely see big exits from Elland Road.
