Danny Mills lauds Leeds star Mateusz Klich

Danny Mills has told Sky Sports News (broadcast on 20/9; 11:53) that Mateusz Klich has been a revelation under Marcelo Bielsa, and suggested that the Leeds United star’s opening day goal was as good technique-wise as Mohamed Salah’s strike in the same game.

Klich has been outstanding in Leeds’s first two games. He scored the Whites’ third goal in their 4-3 defeat to Liverpool, producing a wonderful touch to bring Helder Costa’s pass under control before volleying home his effort.

And he bagged his second of the campaign on Saturday. He converted the penalty that put Leeds 2-1 up in their 4-3 win over Fulham at Elland Road.

Many Leeds fans would have been confident that Klich would be one of the players who would be able to step up their game at the highest level.

Nevertheless, Mills admitted that he could not help but marvel at the transformation that Klich has enjoyed under Marcelo Bielsa.

“When Bielsa came to Elland Road, he was surplus to requirements. He was about to get shown the door. And then Bielsa said: ‘no, I like this player’. I think he’s played all but one game since Bielsa’s been there. He’s been sensational,” he told Sky Sports News.

“You look at his goal last week, the technique that he had, I think the technique is on par with Salah. The finish isn’t quite the same because it doesn’t go in the top corner. But to bring it down with the touch that he had and then score, and then the calm penalty yesterday, he’s been a revelation at Leeds.”

It is remarkable to think about the position Klich seemed to be in after his first season with Leeds. He had barely played for the club and had spent months out on loan before Bielsa’s arrival.

As Mills notes, he has since missed one league game under Bielsa. And that game was the one immediately after Leeds clinched promotion and the Championship title.

He now has 18 goals and 15 assists under his belt across the last three seasons. And it would be no surprise to see the Poland international continue to make a major contribution over the coming months.
