Danny Mills jokes Marcelo Bielsa should be sacked as Leeds win Fairplay Award

Danny Mills has joked on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast show on TalkSPORT that Marcelo Bielsa should be sacked as Leeds United manager, after the Whites on the FIFA Fairplay Award in Milan on Monday night.

Leeds were handed the award despite Bielsa’s involvement with Spygate, for the Argentine’s decision to allow Aston Villa to equalise after Mateusz Klich had scored a controversial goal in last April’s Championship fixture.

Tyler Roberts looked as though he was going to kick the ball out of play, before finding Klich who scored. It sparked a mass scrap between the two sets of players, which saw Anwar El Ghazi sent off. Bielsa allowed Villa and Albert Adomah to equalise.

Former Leeds United defender Mills hilariously joked that Bielsa should be given his marching orders, as winning the Fairplay Award does not match the ‘Dirty Leeds’ tag that has been associated with the Yorkshire side since the Don Revie era.

“I think Bielsa should be sacked,” Mills joked. “I can’t have Leeds winning the Fairplay award. It’s outragerous, it doesn’t happen. What happened to dirty Leeds? The whole ethos of Leeds is dirty Leeds.”

TBR’s view – Do Leeds deserve the award?

Bielsa has done everything he can to put things right. His remarkable interview following the Spygate scandal showed that Bielsa had spied on all of his opponents throughout management – and that in England it is the first time he has reprimanded.

He paid the £200,000 fine himself, out of his own pocket. At the first chance to show fairplay, he allowed Aston Villa to equalise. More than most, Bielsa deserves this award – and so do Leeds.
