When Eurosport reported in mid-January that Tottenham Hotspur wanted Danny Ings ahead of the summer, it appeared that Spurs had identified a fantastic option to potentially provide competition for Harry Kane.
Ings scored 22 Premier League goals last season. He had also already got seven for this campaign by the time the report came out.

Eurosport suggested that Ings is out of contract at the end of next season and is stalling on penning fresh terms. And that had apparently alerted Tottenham.
That report was swiftly followed by another from The Telegraph suggesting that the 28-year-old would like to join a club in the Champions League. And thus, he is apparently keeping his options open.

There is a long way to go until the summer, so a lot can obviously change. But it would be interesting to know whether Jose Mourinho has taken note of Ings’s form since that report emerged.
Southampton have played five times since then. They won the first game in that run. But they have since lost four in a row.
And worryingly for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men, Ings – who earns £75,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – has not scored in any of those five fixtures. In fact, he has scored just once in the last two months.
Of course, some of his performances in that time have still been impressive. And he has never shied away from opportunities in front of goal. But he has squandered a few good chances, with Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Newcastle proving particularly frustrating.
That is alarming for the Saints. And perhaps it may also leave Tottenham wanting to keep a closer eye on his form over the coming weeks.
Ings will surely cost a significant sum in the summer should he leave. And Spurs may be wary of making such a move should his form not pick up again.
