Danny Higginbotham has told The Sun that he would be shocked if Kalvin Phillips is not playing in the Premier League next season as he tipped the Leeds United star to be one of the main beneficiaries from Euro 2020 being postponed.
Phillips has continued to develop his game at Elland Road. And his form following his recent return from suspension may have left some Leeds fans imploring Gareth Southgate to consider him as a surprise selection for the summer’s tournament.
Of course, Euro 2020 will now be played next summer. And Higginbotham has suggested that Phillips is one of the players who may benefit from having another year to prove himself.
“Leeds are a possession-based team and commit a lot of players forward. Phillips is good at sitting back and breaking counters, either in front of the backline or as one of three centre backs, such is his positioning,” he told The Sun.
“And when he is on the ball, his short and long passing range is so intelligent.
“Gareth has watched him a few times this season, and he would have perhaps got a call-up during this international break.
“I would be shocked if he isn’t playing in the Prem, with Leeds or elsewhere next season.”
TBR View – Leeds may have smallest chance of keeping Phillips even without being in the Premier League next season
Leeds fans will be aware that keeping Phillips would be a near impossible task if they fail to get promoted.
Of course, the current situation leaves everything in the air.
And if Leeds are denied the chance to try and get themselves across the line, the Elland Road faithful will be hoping that those figures who may have looked to move on had they fallen short instead decide to finish what they have started.
That may prove to be wishful thinking. But Leeds appear to be on the cusp of something incredibly special.
The Whites can surely not expect to throw away promotion and hold onto Phillips. But perhaps matters will become complicated if their top flight hopes are snatched away from them without another ball being kicked.
