Ex-West Ham defender Danny Gabbidon believes that his former side were “oozing quality” in their win over Newport County on Tuesday night.
The Hammers sealed safe passage past the League Two opposition in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
Jack Wilshere opened the scoring just before half-time with a low driven shot, while summer recruit Pablo Fornals wrapped up a 2-0 scoreline away from home in the second-half with a close-range finish.
With one eye still on the Premier League, manager Manuel Pellegrini made 10 changes to his team and checked on a number of fringe players in the cup fixture.
West Ham host Norwich City on Saturday in the last game before the international break and a win would leave them with seven points from four league matches to start the season.
Gabbidon is impressed by the strength of the Hammers squad and is tipping them as a potential dark horse in the cup too.
“Good game! Newport has some good moments but couldn’t get that goal. West Ham are a serious threat to this competition. 10 changes but still oozing quality tonight,” Gabbidon wrote on his personal Twitter account.

TBR’s View:
West Ham weren’t at their dazzling best against Newport, but did a professional job and the strength of depth in the squad is quite obvious.
They have added some real quality players at the London Stadium under Pellegrini and they need to try see improvements on the pitch this season.
There is often criticism fired at teams in the Premier League that don’t go all out to win cup competitions, so it will be intriguing to see how willing Pellegrini is to rotate his team the further they go in the Carabao Cup.
