Danny Cowley reacts as Arsenal loanee Miguel Azeez makes debut
Danny Cowley has suggested that Miguel Azeez will learn a lot from his full Portsmouth debut after the Arsenal loanee was taken off before the hour-mark on Saturday – in comments reported by The News.
Azeez was named in the starting lineup as Pompey hosted Cambridge looking to end a run of four games without a win.
Unfortunately, it proved to be a tough start to life at Fratton Park for the 18-year-old.
Portsmouth were beaten 2-1. And Azeez was taken off after just 59 minutes having struggled to make a huge impact while he was involved.
Cowley has backed the Gunners starlet to kick on. But he did seem to suggest that it was not the best start for the teenager.
“Miguel is such a young player who is finding his way in professional football,” he said, as reported by The News.
“It was a tough start but this is the life of a professional footballer – it’s not always easy.
“But he’s a top player and he will learn a lot from today.
“And like I said, for us, we didn’t get the team right – we accept that, have to take responsibility for that.”
Azeez good enough to bounce back as Arsenal loanee endures tough Portsmouth debut
Cowley has taken some of the blame for Azeez struggling. And it must not be forgotten that some supporters did not want the youngster to leave the Emirates on loan.
Some felt that he could have a role to play in Mikel Arteta’s plans. So he certainly has the quality to bounce back.
Some drew comparisons between Azeez and Emile Smith Rowe after the latter signed for Cowley while he was Huddersfield boss.
It is easy to forget that Smith Rowe did not always stand out with the Terriers because of how influential he has been since returning to North London.
It was never going to be a simple season for Azeez. And there is every reason to believe that he will bounce back from a tricky start.
