Danny Cowley praises Arsenal youngster Miguel Azeez

Danny Cowley has been lauding Arsenal prospect Miguel Azeez after the youngster’s arrival at Portsmouth.

The Hale End academy prospect joined the south coast outfit on a season-long loan during the transfer window.

He spent the summer alongside the Arsenal first-team during the pre-season tour in Scotland. Azeez also scored in the friendly against Watford.

The 18-year-old made an appearance off the bench in the Europa League last campaign. However, with Arsenal not in Europe, he would have found game time hard to come by this term.

Cowley has claimed Azeez is more of a number 10 as he praised the England under-20 international.

The lowdown on Scotland's THREE men hunting first caps

When talking to The News about Azeez, Cowley said: “Miguel wakes up in the morning and is not thinking about stopping goals – he’s thinking about scoring and creating goals. He likes that space, he’s clever, he’s a bright boy, he loves football.”

Azeez needs to settle into a position

The comments from Cowley show that Azeez needs to settle into a position fairly quickly for Arsenal.

His frame and abilities show that he can do a job at both ends of the pitch. However, as he showed in pre-season, his true strengths lie in the final third.

The midfielder scored a great goal against Watford in the summer, curling the ball into the far corner after a set-piece routine.

It was a display of his prowess as a creative player and threat in the attacking third.

And it seems Cowley will be using him as an attacking midfielder this summer. So, why change that?

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is an example of why youngsters need to find and settle in one position. His failure to seal a place in the starting XI, despite all his talents, can be put down to his versatility.

It was something former Gunners star Ashley Cole picked up on when discussing the player.

After the debacle over Maitland-Niles, you would hope Arsenal have learned their lesson.
