There was a surprise for some Liverpool fans when September’s player of the month was announced by the club as news emerged that the award had gone to Daniel Sturridge.

The 29-year-old failed to start a Premier League game and only played 11 minutes in the league in the month in which he won the award, but his displays in cup competitions fired him to the award.

Three memorable strikes, two against Chelsea and one against Paris Saint-Germain, have put the former Manchester City man back in the frame for Jurgen Klopp.

Sturridge’s Liverpool future was in doubt in the summer but he now looks to have stepped up and taken on the reigns as the first option in reserve from the bench, fighting off the likes of Dominic Solanke and Divock Origi.

Against Huddersfield Town on Saturday, injuries to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane could give Sturridge his first Premier League start for Liverpool since November 2017 and the perfect opportunity to justify his award.

Having featured against Napoli and Manchester City, Sturridge will be out to continue his prolific form by scoring when starting and staking a claim for a regular spot in the side.
