Daniel Levy backed to hire ‘exceptional’ manager at Tottenham Hotspur in Antonio Conte
Graham Roberts has backed Daniel Levy on Twitter to hire an ‘exceptional’ manager at Tottenham Hotspur in Antonio Conte.
Spurs are in talks with the former Inter Milan boss over taking up the vacant north London hot seat (Guardian). Conte walked away from the San Siro last week over discrepancies with the club’s owners over plans to sell players.
Inter have to raise around €100million (£86m) to balance the books and have asked players to accept 15-20% wage cuts. Conte instead wanted backing for transfers in the summer window to be able to build on the Serie A title.
Conte is now the leading candidate to replace Jose Mourinho at Tottenham two months after parting with the Portuguese. A deal is not yet finalised and some fear a final hurdle will emerge that could risk ending the negotiations.
“I adore Poch and the love he has for Spurs is incredible,” Roberts wrote. “He would be my main choice as he has real love for our club. But Conte would also be very exciting, but he would need to reshape [the] whole side. But a exceptional coach.”
TBR’s view: Conte a risk for Tottenham over Pochettino
Tottenham held talks with Pochettino (The Athletic) before turning to Conte. But plans for the Argentine to return failed to materialise and Paris Saint-Germain are extremely confident he will stay (Telegraph).
Pochettino would have been a much safer choice for Levy than appointing Conte. He knows Spurs inside out from his five years in north London and many of his former players are still there. The 49-year-old also worked with a restricted budget throughout his time at the club.
That may prove a challenge for Conte given his desires to spend at Inter after clinching the title. The 51-year-old will also want assurances over what budget Levy is able to provide before accepting the Tottenham job.
Levy, then, is taking a risk by pursuing Conte over going all-out for Pochettino. Although the Spurs Chairman will hire a no-nonsense coach who should turn Tottenham’s fortunes around if he is given the right support.
