A number of Liverpool fans on Twitter have been discussing the prospect of Mario Gotze joining the Reds after Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc confirmed the player would be leaving the club this summer.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp managed the 63-capped Germany international during his time in charge at Dortmund prior to the player’s departure to Bayern Munich in 2013, before making his return to Signal Iduna Park three years later for a reported £19.8million (Transfermarkt).
Gotze, who scored the winner in the 2014 World Cup final, has been limited to a bit-part role this season by head coach Lucien Favre, who has bolstered his attacking ranks further this month with Erling Braut Haaland joining from Red Bull Salzburg, and has only started five league games this term.
“We will part ways with Mario Gotze this summer,” Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc told Sky Germany. “It was a mutual and respectful decision. Mario is a great man.
“He is a very good player who comes from our own youth system. But it is also in his spirit that he is looking for a new job. Maybe abroad.”
Gotze told Bild in an interview in April last year: “[Klopp] knew that I wanted to leave Bayern. Of course, we talked. He knows me very well and that I am always looking for new challenges.
“I often speak to Klopp. He brought me to the first team when I was 17 and he made it all possible. We never stopped talking.”
Whether Klopp would find room in the Liverpool squad for Gotze is unclear, but given the good working relationship the two have had in the past, not to mention potentially being able to snap him up for free – particularly in wake of current events – it’s not the most far-fetched of ideas.
Here is what some Liverpool fans on social media have made of the news:
Mario Gotze leaving Dortmund? Still only 27, works well under Klopp and with the right structured contract could definitely be an astute signing for #LFC

I would take him to be on the bench. 👍🏻 YNWA probably wouldn’t cost a lot either

He’s only 27, with lallana leaving, could he come eo Papa Klopp? He doesn’t normally work with players twice but could break the rule for his friend Mario. That’s my prediction.
