George Partey the father of Arsenal midfielder Thomas has backed his son to be a roaring success with the Gunners, in an interview with Joy Sports, although he admits to being surprised at him signing for a club, not in the Champions League.

The Ghanian midfielder completed a stunning transfer deadline day move to the Emirates Stadium ending a summer-long saga between Arsenal and his former club Atletico Madrid.

Los Rojiblancos made it clear they wouldn’t sell the midfield powerhouse unless his release clause of £45 million was met and with the hours ticking down, the Gunners decided to act.

Partey rose through the youth ranks at Atletico Madrid and in signing for Arsenal he completes Mikel Arteta’s squad for the 2020/21 campaign.

The Spaniard made it no secret that Partey was his number one target and after a strong start to the season, Arteta must fancy his chances of doing great things with the Gunners.

Challange

Partey’s dad, George, has told Ghanian press that his son will be one of the top players in the Premier League and has laid down the gauntlet to his son as far as returning to the Champions League is concerned.

He told Joy Sports: “I told him that this is an opportunity that has come to pass some years back. What I noticed was that he was willing to play where there is Champions League football. I said to him why can’t he be where there is no Champions League and help them get into the Champions League?

“My advice was irrespective of the big move, he has to keep training seriously and not lose his focus. He was very receptive of that.

“With Partey, if it was wrestling or boxing I can’t defend him but for football, anywhere on this earth, Partey will be selected in the top 10/20 out of 150.”

The central midfielder managed 188 appearances for Atletico having made his debut in 2011. He proved a revelation under Diego Simeone and the Argentine will sorely miss him this season.

Simeone’s loss is Arteta’s gain, however, and Gunners supporters will be relishing the chance to see the international maestro in action.

After a few years out of the Champions League bubble, if the 27-year-old finds his form, Arsenal might be on course for a return to the European big time next season.
